No Escape Room 2018 Review & Trailer

No Escape Room Poster

No Escape Room is about a father and daughter who break down on a road trip. They stop in a small town while their car is repaired and trying to impress his checked-out daughter, suggests going to an Escape Room advertised in the local paper. Of course, things take a turn for the group trying to solve the puzzle and they wonder if any of them will escape alive. There are so many escape room movies to choose from, that it’s hard to tell which ones are good and which are worth skipping. Mother of Movies has reviews for many of these films. I like them all.

This No Escape Room movie spends time providing a sense of familiarity and care factor to at least two of the cast characters. I did kind of like them though. So even though the rest of the group is barely introduced I cared just enough when they eventually run into trouble. For a while, there’s a steady tension in the air and the film travels along just nicely. This battle for survival is set inside a house. Is the house haunted or is someone pulling the strings?

Are All Groups In Escape Rooms the Same?

As for the group dynamic, they’ve gone for the generic formula. You’ve got;

  • A guy who doesn’t want to be there,
  • Another with good intentions
  • The cool chick,
  • The one who thinks they’re awesome at puzzles and,
  • the loner no one knows.

With the addition of dad and daughter, it’s the only room of this type to do something different. But of course, it wouldn’t be an escape room movie without it being someone’s birthday. The fun in any film with this theme is trying to figure out who might be in on it. Performances range from solid to slightly off which makes it hard to tell if anyone is pretending to be someone they’re not.

No Escape Room Has Similarities to The Cube Movie

Meanwhile, the backdrop of a technologically advanced house despite its worn antiquated features is a nice touch. It gives off a vibe, not unlike the movie The Cube (2013.) At this instant, I wondered if the narration would have any similarities.  Unlike The Cube, I suspected this story wouldn’t turn into a sci-fi film with vicious traps that kill its victims. After all, this film is a made-for-TV movie but it feels like it could go there.

After that, with the introduction of some paranormal overtones, this film tries to bring some scares and it does manage to raise one or two hairs. For the most part, I really enjoyed the complexity this story tried to bring even if it was somewhat odd at times.

Everything about the music is used to cast an ever-increasing sense of doom. Whoever did the score for this did a bang-up job of highlighting every single thing into jump scares. Thanks for the warning on even the smallest of things pal.

Dumb Horror Movie Characters Trope

What I didn’t like were the inconsistent personality traits of certain characters. Smart people with common sense, suddenly behave as if they’ve had a lobotomy we didn’t see. For most, horror movies with dumb-as-door-knobs characters, it’s times like this I rue being a horror fan. When it fits in within the structure of the film and has a purpose, fine, but here, certain characters act off-camera, someone bashed them in the head.

It’s either unpolished scripting or bad editing. To begin with, there are hints, that the players are given acid to get them in the spirit, but it still doesn’t explain them being normal one minute and the next not.

All things considered, the latter half only had a few scenes that seemed to go on a little too long with not a lot to say. There are also some odd events that were entirely unexplained.

I give No Escape Room

Will There Be a Sequel For No Escape Room?

Alex Merkin has not made a sequel for this title. He has released a new escape room movie called Follow Me which was originally titled “No Escape.”

No Escape Room Movie Trailer

Is No Escape Room a bad movie? Mother of Movies rated it as average. I love this theme and tend to enjoy it even when it’s generic and flawed. I still think this film is worth watching.
