Don’t miss out on the opportunity to embark on this thrilling cinematic journey.

Nazi Undead Review of a Psychological Horror Movie

  • Steven Spiel | Australia 2018 | 80 Minutes
  • Release in March 2018.
  • Nazi Undead cast includes Leigh Scully, Georgia Chara, Andy McPhee, and Emma Leonard.

Plot Summary For Nazi Undead:

  • Imagine you’re on a romantic holiday and your car breaks down. In Germany, loved-up couples Brad and Ashley end up at a lonely farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. But will they survive the night?

Also called “Living Space”, the film starts with a back-story and, the beginning starts with a mini-history lesson. The film smoothly flows into some great scenic imagery with aerial shots (from cinematographer Branco Grabovac).

I was intrigued when I discovered that the movie “Nazi Undead” was filmed in Geelong, Australia, despite being set in Germany. It was quite surprising to hear an English-speaking German character engaging in conversations with Ashley, played by Georgia Chara, who is known for her roles in popular series like “Neighbours” and “Home and Away”. Initially, the almost American-sounding accent of Ashley caught me off guard, but as the film progressed, I grew to appreciate her solid performance and her unique blend of Australian and American accents.

One aspect that stood out to me was the absence of excessive screaming usually associated with horror flicks. Instead, the movie employed other means to create tension, resulting in scenes filled with unnerving and spine-chilling sounds. Overall, “Nazi Undead” offers a fresh take on the horror genre that might appeal to those seeking a different kind of fright.

Act 1: Australian-American Accents

Ashley’s boyfriend Brad (Leigh Scully also of Home and Away) seemed much more natural as an American. Yet I know Australian horror is on-trend and I think, I would have preferred they’d been cast as Australian tourists.

This matter was discussed at question time after the film, and somehow it was decided the roles were better for young Americans. I found it impossible to raise my hand and point out I disagreed, but I did but at the right time and the right place and all that.

This film is what could be considered elevated horror but not the arty type.  It does make you think and you do need to pay attention. Not the type that many debate as being un-horror because there is no violence or scare factor. This one comes complete with a Nazi misogynist, ghosts, sewn lips, and cracked limbs. Living Space is born of some of the more well-known concepts.  I had a flashback of the film Triangle (2009) but Living Space has its horror trope infusion.

Best Psychological Horror Movies

The story of Nazi Undead is intricately woven with tiny speckles of detail. During the chat with the cast and crew afterward, I was able to confirm certain things that I noticed during the film, such as the infinity necklace. Bonus points for me. All the imagery is reflected in the narrative. The acting was solid, although, in my opinion, they just weren’t as good as the idea itself. Nazis and all.

The makeup and effects display the utmost excellence. Upon discovering the inclusion of prestigious talent like Steven Boyle in the team, the reason behind their exceptional work became evident. With a track record that includes contributing to renowned films like 30 Days of Night, King Kong, Bait, and Ghost Ship, Boyle’s involvement alone is enough to captivate any audience. His expertise extends even further, having played a significant role in shaping the visual effects of notable blockbusters like Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones.

Is Nazi Undead A Good Horror Movie?

Nazi Undead isn’t without its flaws, not a lot of independent film is. Me, I had a great time with it and I’d give it a repeat viewing. Somehow, it’s one of those rare beasts that cause you to contemplate afterward and I found it clever. Sure this film has some predictability but I also noticed Ashley’s character development within her continual loop.

I enjoyed this one and I think it stands out in the crowd.

I give Nazi Undead

3 infinity necklaces out of 5.

Where to Watch Nazi Undead

“Nazi Undead” Premiere (Brisbane) Psychological Horror Movies

After watching the Nazi Undead movie, I stood near Natalie Forward (producer) and asked if I could pass on my questions to Steven Spiel. I introduced myself to Mr. Spiel (and managed to not tell him who I was.) Thankfully, I’d managed to say some non-silly-sounding words and chatted with him about how great Australian horror is.
Nailed it.
